UNC Health Southeastern Volunteer Program

There is perhaps no greater gift than giving your time and talents to help others. At UNC Health Southeastern, volunteers play an important role by adding a personal touch to interactions with patients, loved ones and visitors. We value our volunteers and their commitment to our organization!

What is Volunteering and Why Should I Volunteer?

Volunteering is “voluntarily” giving of your time to help a cause or organization. Volunteering has many benefits. One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. It allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. As a volunteer, you have an opportunity to meet new people, try something new, stay active, enjoy social interactions with others, and bring a smile to the faces of those going through a difficult time. Whatever your reason may be, volunteering can have a positive impact on your life and can also have a great impact on others.

Volunteering vs. Internship

An internship is work that you take on in order to learn more about a given profession. An intern generally works under the tutelage of someone who is knowledgeable in the field and is qualified to give guidance—a one-on-one learning experience. If interested in an internship or job shadowing, please contact Human Resources at (910) 671-5281.

Volunteer Programs

Adult Volunteers

This year-round program is for anyone 18 years of age or older. As an adult volunteer, we are able to provide you with a flexible schedule that works well for you and our organizational needs.

Junior Volunteers

This six-week summer program is for young adults between the ages of 14-18 who meet certain qualifications.

The requirements are that the student must be 14 years old by May 1st of the summer they wish to volunteer and will be entering the 9th grade or higher at the beginning of the school year. New junior volunteer applicants will need to apply and will have an interview. The number of open junior volunteer slots each summer is dependent upon how many former junior volunteers are returning and how many open slots we have based on the volunteer needs of the organization. We do not have junior volunteer opportunities during the school year. Additional information about the junior volunteer program and the application will be available in March of each year.

How much time do I have to commit to volunteering with UNC Health Southeastern?

There are a variety of days and times available for our adult volunteers. Some volunteers serve as little as four hours every other week, while others volunteer up to 20 hours a week. To be a volunteer, we require a minimum of a six month commitment to our volunteer program. Hours are available to fit your lifestyle and training is provided.
