Joint Replacement
Enjoy the active lifestyle you want and deserve. Explore hip, knee, or shoulder replacement surgery—an option for long-lasting relief from joint pain. You’ll stay in your Lumberton-area community while getting advanced care from Southeastern Orthopedics, where the experts are your neighbors.
Is Joint Replacement Right for Me?
Ask orthopedic surgeon Michael Maggitti, MD, about joint replacement if arthritis or a joint injury:
- Stops you from doing daily activities
- Makes it hard to sleep
- Doesn’t go away after nonsurgical treatments, such as knee pain treatment, steroid injections, or injections of hyaluronic acid (a joint lubricant)
How Does Joint Replacement Work?
Surgery exchanges your painful, worn-out joint for an artificial one. The new joint is customized to fit your knee, hip, or shoulder, so it feels natural. After your recovery from surgery, you’ll likely be able to move around much more like you used to—and enjoy a better quality of life.
Surgical Procedures
Southeastern Orthopedics provides:
- Total and partial knee replacement
- Total hip replacement, including the anterior (front) approach, which affects fewer muscles and leads to a faster recovery than the posterior (back) approach
- Total shoulder replacement, including reverse shoulder replacement, which may let you raise your arm higher after a severe rotator cuff injury
Preparing for Surgery
Start physical therapy before joint replacement. You’ll strengthen the muscles around your joint and begin learning exercises to do after surgery, so your recovery is easier.
To learn what to expect from surgery, read our patient guidebook [PDF], which explains every step of the process.
Preventing & Easing Surgical Pain
You’ll receive general anesthesia to prevent pain and make you sleep during surgery. A doctor may also give you a nerve block—an injection near your joint. This medicine limits pain after surgery, so you feel more comfortable as you recover at home.
Long-Term Follow-Up Care
Make sure your surgical incision heals well and track your progress after surgery. See your surgeon for follow-up appointments at these postsurgical milestones:
- Two weeks
- Six weeks
