Breast Surgery

We understand that the prospect of breast disease can be emotionally daunting, but you don’t have to face it alone. Our skilled, caring professionals at Southeastern Surgical Center are ready to answer your questions, discuss your options, and provide you with state-of-the-art care. The procedures we offer include:

  • Lumpectomy – We practice breast conservation surgery, where appropriate. Depending on your condition, we are able to remove the diseased area of the breast leaving the remainder of the breast intact. In some cases of cancer, this type of surgery combined with appropriate postoperative therapy, gives the same outcome as having the entire breast removed.
  • Simple mastectomy – Some patients with cancer, unfortunately, are not candidates for breast conversation and require removal of the entire breast.
  • Modified radical mastectomy – Similar to a simple mastectomy, this procedure removes the entire breast but the surgeon also removes the lymph nodes in your armpit on the same side. Your surgeon will discuss this type of procedure in cases where cancer has moved to the lymph nodes in your armpit.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy – For cancer, your surgeon will want to ensure that no cancerous cells have spread into the lymph in your armpit. Our surgeons use 2 types of chemicals to help identify lymph nodes that might be affected by cancer.
  • Axillary lymph node dissection – If cancer cells are found during a sentinel biopsy, your surgeon will want to remove and examine additional lymph nodes under your arm. The goal of this procedure is to help prevent recurrence and to determine exactly how far the cancer has spread, which will help guide further therapy.

We want to emphasize that we are here for you during the difficult journey of dealing with breast cancer. Our surgeons, with the aid of our cancer navigators and oncologists will be with you every step of the way.
