Health system to drop COVID vaccine mandate for employment

UNC Health Southeastern

The White House announced on May 1 that Health and Human Services will no longer require health care facility employees to obtain a COVID vaccine as a condition of employment. In response to this announcement, UNC Health Southeastern will discontinue the vaccine requirement for all employees, volunteers and vendors or contractors, effective with Health and Human Services direction which we expect very soon.

“We continue to follow the guidelines and mandates of our governing agencies, and we agree that we are now in a place with COVID that the requirement is no longer necessary as a condition of employment,” said UNC Health Southeastern President/CEO Chris Ellington. “We do encourage the vaccine as a continued safe method for preventing serious illness from the virus.”

Last month, the health system reduced mask requirements to only in its emergency room and by individuals with upper respiratory symptoms.
